Prayer
You do not have to begin with a long text. Sometimes the first step toward prayer begins with one honest sentence.
You can listen if an English voice is available in your browser.
Prayer often frightens people. It seems that you need to know Hebrew, understand the order of the prayer book, stand correctly, read correctly and feel something special. A person looks at a siddur and sees not a door, but a wall: many words, an unfamiliar order, the confidence of others around him. That is why many people do not even begin.
But at the very beginning, prayer can be simpler. It is the moment when a person stops carrying everything inside in silence and turns to the Holy One in his own words. Not because someone is checking. Not because he needs to look religious. But because things gather inside a person that cannot be locked away forever: a request, gratitude, anxiety, fatigue, guilt, hope, a question.
Not everyone can open a siddur right now and enter the fixed prayer. But a person can begin with one honest sentence. Say it quietly. Without the right intonation. Without beautiful words. Simply as it is.
That is where movement begins. Not with a large religious image, but with the moment when a person stops hiding from himself and says aloud for the first time what has been living inside for a long time.
In Jewish tradition there is fixed prayer. There is a siddur, an order, times, community, words that connect a person not only with himself but also with the people of Israel. This is not an accidental text. It is a form that developed over centuries.
But alongside fixed prayer there is also personal address. A person can speak with the Holy One in simple words, in his own language, from the place where he stands now.
For one person, the first step begins with the siddur. For another, with one sentence said quietly. The main thing is not to perform religiosity, but to begin speaking truth.
Prayer does not make a person weak. On the contrary, it gives him back an inner spine. Usually we live as a reaction to outside noise: a call, work, money, news, other people's opinions, fear for family, fatigue in the body. The day passes, and a person speaks with everyone except the One who matters most.
In prayer there appears a silence in which a person can finally hear himself. Not the beautiful version of himself, not the strong one, not the correct one, but the real one: the one who is afraid, asks, gives thanks, is angry, hopes and still wants to find a way.
Sometimes the first step toward prayer is not to say many words. The first step is to stop pretending that nothing is happening inside. A person can be busy, needed, collected and strong for years, but one honest sentence before the Holy One can be truer than a whole day of conversations.
Torah and Chazal
Quote«And to serve Him with all your heart»
Chazal explain service of the heart as prayer. This matters for a beginner: prayer begins not with an outer pose, but with an inner turning.
Rambam
IdeaRambam connects prayer with a person's daily turning to the Holy One. Not as a rare emotional explosion, but as a steady part of life.
For a beginner, this removes unnecessary drama. Prayer can begin not with a powerful feeling, but with small regularity.
The image of the ladder
IdeaPrayer is compared to a ladder whose base stands on the earth and whose top reaches heaven.
This is a strong image for a first step. A person is not required to be at the top immediately. He begins where he stands. Even if the prayer is not perfect, it still has value.
Today, do not try to 'pray correctly'. Choose one living place from which you can begin: gratitude, fear, a request for health, pain, family, the path.
You can say one short sentence. Not a beautiful one. Not a religious one. Your own.
If there is gratitude: 'God, thank You for this day and for the good that I often do not notice.'
If there is fear: 'God, I am afraid. Help me pass through this day calmly.'
If there is pain: 'God, it is hard for me. Give me strength not to close myself off and not to become hard.'
If there is a request for health: 'Holy One, send health to me and to those close to me, and give me strength to do what depends on me.'
If there is family: 'God, protect those I love. Help me be near them without anger and exhaustion.'
If there is a desire to return to the roots: 'Holy One, help me find the road to what is real and not be afraid of the first step.'
Do not wait for a special state. You can say this before sleep, in the morning, in the car, outside, in the quiet of the kitchen when no one hears. Prayer can begin not with a long text, but with the moment when a person stops being silent about what truly lives inside.
Do not look for the right words. Choose what is closer now:
- 'Thank You.'
- 'I am afraid.'
- 'Help me.'
- 'Give health to those close to me.'
- 'Give me strength.'
- 'Help me return to myself and to You.'
A thought may appear: 'I do not know how to pray.' Or: 'This is too simple.' Or: 'If I do not feel anything special, then it is not real.'
Do not rush to those conclusions. Sometimes a person spends years speaking with people, arguing, explaining, defending himself, but never once says before the Holy One the simplest thing: 'I am afraid', 'I am grateful', 'I need help', 'I want to return.'
The first step does not have to look big. It has to be real.
With what would I most want to turn to the Holy One right now: gratitude, a request, fear, pain or hope?
You do not have to keep this thought in your head. Write it in your path and return to it later.
